Timeless Fashion

by carolineboykin on August 18, 2011

“Put on then,
as God’s chosen ones,
holy and beloved,

COMPASSION,

KINDNESS,
HUMILITY,
MEEKNESS
and PATIENCE.

And above all these put on LOVE,
which binds everything together in perfect harmony.”

Colossians 3:12, 14 ESV

If you’re heading out to do some back-to-school shopping with your kids, bring these verses along with you and seize a few teachable moments.  As God’s cherished people, we can dress head to toe in the latest fashions and still not be fully clothed.

Because we’re “holy” (set apart, sacred) through faith in Christ, we have special spiritual clothes God designed for us to wear.  They don’t fade, pill, rip, stain, shrink, or cost a dime. The Lord Jesus himself offers us a fresh supply of His compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience and love each and every day.  We simply need to intentionally and mindfully “put it on” then “wear it” for His name’s sake.

Click on the link to listen to this passage from SEEDS Family Worship. By the end of the song you and your child will know Colossians 3:12, 14 by memory. Kick off the new school year by singing “Put on Love” together as you get your little ones dressed each morning.  What a great way to start your day – and make a lasting impression moldable little hearts!

Sheltered. Shielded. Protected.

by carolineboykin on August 16, 2011

“He will cover you with his feathers.
He will shelter you with his wings.
His faithful promises are your armor and protection.”

Psalm 91:4

“Under His Wings”
Hymn by William Cushing and Ira Sankey
1896

Under His wings I am safely abiding,
Though the night deepens and tempests are wild,
Still I can trust Him – I know He will keep me,
He has redeemed me, and I am His child.

Refrain:
Under His wings, under His wings,
Who from His love can sever?
Under His wings my soul shall abide,
Safely abide forever.

Under His wings, what a refuge in sorrow!
How my heart yearningly turns to His rest!
Often when earth has no balm for my healing,
There I find comfort, and there I am blessed.

Under His wings, oh, what precious enjoyment!
There will I hide till life’s trials are o’er;
Sheltered, protected, no evil can harm me,
Resting in Jesus, I’m safe evermore.

God’s “faithful promises are [our] armor and protection.”  Each Friday, starting September 16th, I’ll be posting a verse/passage giving us a faithful promise from God!

Jesus is…the True Vine

by carolineboykin on August 12, 2011

“I am the vine; you are the branches.
If a man remains in me and I in him,
he will bear much fruit;
apart from me you can do nothing.”

John 15:5

“How does the branch bear fruit?  Not by incessant effort for sunshine and air; not by vain struggles…. It simply abides in the vine, in silent and undisturbed union, and blossoms and fruit appear as of spontaneous growth.

“How, then, shall a Christian bear fruit?  By efforts and struggles to obtain that which is freely given? No…. Their hope and trust rest solely on what he is willing and able to do for them; on nothing that they suppose themselves able and willing to do for him.

“Some may say, ‘Truly this is a very delightful state of feeling, but how shall we obtain it? How shall we begin?’

“Just in the same way that a sinner begins the Christian life, by coming to the Saviour, and making a full, free and hearty surrender of his body, soul and spirit; resigning the whole to the Redeemer’s direction. And having made this general surrender, make it also in reference to every circumstance of every day.”

-Harriet Beecher Stowe, in her booklet, How to Live on Christ

Take heart.

by carolineboykin on August 10, 2011

“But as for you,
be strong and do not give up,
for your work will be rewarded.”

2 Chronicles 15:7

Asa was king of Judah – a good king who “did what was right in the eyes of the Lord as David had done.”  From early in his reign, he went to work destroying his father’s idols, expelling shrine prostitutes, and cleaning up the badly desecrated temple.  He led a tough reform – and faced fierce opposition.

The prophet Asariah challenged Asa to remain true to the Lord and persevere, saying: “But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded.” When Asa heard these words, he “took courage” and intensified his kingdom efforts with fervor. Even though Asa’s heart was fully committed to the Lord, he needed Asariah’s timely encouragement to continue investing himself wholeheartedly in God’s purposes.

Like the king, today’s words breathe needed courage into my spirit.  How about you?  Are you about to throw in the towel and surrender to despair?  Has the heat from challenging circumstances or painful relationships zapped your energy to live in faithful obedience to God?  Are you exhausted from battling the same struggles day after day with little or no victory? Do you feel like giving up?

“But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded.” God sees you.  He hears you.  He waits to revitalize you with His strength, peace, and perseverance.  So cry out to him.  Ask your heavenly Father to encourage you in a deeply personal way, and then wait patiently for his answer.  Remain true to the Lord and his work. Know that all you do (in word or action) for his name’s sake will be rewarded – both in this life, and more importantly in the eternal life to come.

Family LINK: This is a great verse for kids to know as they head back to school.  Encourage them to start the school year strong and not to give up when the going gets tough.  Provide some good rewards (incentives) for them to work hard in their studies and responsibilities.  And let them know that God promises to be with them every step of the way.

Jesus is…Our Peace in the Storm

by carolineboykin on August 9, 2011

“O LORD God Almighty, who is like you?
You are mighty, O LORD, and your faithfulness surrounds you.
You rule over the surging sea;
when its waves mount up, you still them.”

Psalm 89:8-9

Lord, keep me still,
Though stormy waves may blow
And waves my little boat may overflow,
Or even if in darkness I must go;
Lord, keep me still.

The waves are in Thy hand,
The roughest seas subside at Thy command.
Steer Thou my boat in safely to the land
And keep me still,
Keep me still.

Jesus is…the Only Bridge to God

by carolineboykin on August 5, 2011

“Jesus answered,
‘I am the way
and the truth
and the life.
No one comes to the Father except through me.’”

John 14:6

As a young girl, I remember learning “The Four Spiritual Laws,” written in 1952 by Bill Bright, founder of Campus Crusade for Christ.  Bright wrote them in the form of a pocket-sized booklet (tract) as an evangelistic tool to clearly and concisely explain the gospel of salvation.  Over the years, millions of the booklets have circulated around the world, leading countless people to saving faith in Christ.  Today the message of “The Four Spiritual Laws” continues on in various forms and languages.

The third law says, “Jesus Christ is God’s only provision for man’s sin. Through Him you can know and experience God’s love and plan for your life.”  The corresponding diagram illustrates that God has bridged the gulf that separates us from Him by sending His Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross in our place to pay the penalty for our sins. The Scripture reference is:

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life,
no one comes to the Father but through Me”

Can I encourage you to click on the link below to read an illustrated version of “The Four Spiritual Laws”?  It only takes a minute.  Even if you’ve been a Christian for years, I think you’ll find the beauty and simplicity of the gospel refreshing.  And then who knows – you might have the chance to share it with someone else…

Family Fun LINK: I honestly think of this verse almost every time I go over a long bridge.  Your kids can “see” this verse come to life in the same way.  Easily associate and connect the meaning of this key verse with a bridge.  Walk or drive over a bridge with your child while explaining that Jesus’ bridges our relationship with God, making it possible to be with God in heaven.  Look up pictures of bridges.  Google the longest bridge in the world.  (I’m not sure what that is!)  But even the longest bridge can’t get us to heaven.  Only Jesus can.  And he waits for you to believe in Him alone to do so!

If you’d like downloadable verse cards for the 7 “I AM”s of Jesus, scoot over to the sidebar and click on the “Free Memory Verse Downloads.” Each verse includes an illustration to link and aid memorization.

Salt of the Earth

by carolineboykin on August 4, 2011

“Salt is good,
but if it loses its saltiness, how can you make it salty again?
Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with each other.”

Mark 9:50

I was in the final stages of seasoning my homemade potato salad when frustration set in.  The new “Mediterranean Salt Mill” I’d recently purchased was pitiful.  The salt had no flavor at all.  I kept cranking and tasting, cranking and tasting, until I blurted out, “UGH…this salt is worthless!”

I checked the expiration date – 10/07/13.  The salt crystals looked white and fresh.  The bottle was attractive and the mill worked perfectly.  The problem was the salt inside.  No flavor.  Somehow it had lost its saltiness.  So, in the trash it went.

I’ve never experienced that before.  A little while later, as I was ruminating over my disappointing and wasteful salt purchase, I thought of today’s verse:

“Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can you make it salty again? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with each other.”

Then God spoke to my heart.  The useless salt I bought was a poignant object lesson.  Sure, the salt mill came from a respected organic food market and it appeared to be high quality.  But it didn’t do what it was supposed to – season my potato salad.  Among the thoughts that came to my mind, I was reminded how many of us, as believers in Christ, are just like my salt mill.  Our “packaging” (appearance) looks attractive and we are found at respectable places in society, but we have lost our God-given objective as peacemakers.  We’ve lost our saltiness – our flavorful contribution as loving neighbors, accepting friends, forgiving family members.

“Oh Lord, help each of us as your children “have salt in ourselves and be at peace with each other” – our family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, even our enemies.  Help us to sprinkle grace wherever we go, to whom ever we meet.  For you have told us, we are “the salt of the earth.”  Help us not to disappoint.”

LIVE God’s Word: Is there someone you sense you ought to make peace with today? Ask God to lead you and then take that salty step of reconciliation.

Fun Family LINKS for memory: Salt is essential not only to life, but to good heath.  Here are a few salty tips I found interesting and useful:

  • Treat mosquito bites and poison ivy with a saltwater soak.  Then apply a poultice of salt mixed with olive oil.
  • Prevent mold on cheese by wrapping it in a cloth moistened with saltwater before refrigerating.
  • Soak toothbrushes in salt water before your first use; they’ll last longer.
  • Add a pinch of salt to milk to keep it fresh longer.
  • Sprinkling a little salt in canvas shoes occasionally will take up the moisture and help remove odors. (We are Tom’s Shoes lovers and need this tip at our house!)
  • To relieve fatigue, soak relaxed for at least ten minutes in a tub of water into which several handfuls of salt have been placed.
